Queering Ceremony - About Reverend Elia Singer Intro.jpeg

Rev. Elia Decai Singer

I am a Ceremonialist and Interfaith/Interspiritual minister whose pathway is woven with many fine and multi-coloured threads.

I’m an experienced ceremonialist, trained hospital chaplain, accredited wedding officiant, certified mediator, a long-time Al-Anon fellow, a teacher, writer, storyteller, and student who revels in my Ashkenazi Jewish lineage. I am also the co-creator and co-host of Wonder Queer, a podcast that explores stories of awe, magic, mystery, and wonderment from queer lives.

Wonder and imagination have always been touchstones for me. As a kid, I longed to go to Hebrew school and adored the rituals that my Jewish Aunties held. The spark of these traditions sang strongly for me and eventually guided me to discover and rediscover how to center creative ceremony in my life.

When I was eighteen, I fell in love with a girl leading me down queer roads – first as a dyke, later and now as a non-binary queer. I have been out in many expressions of queerdom for forty years. Being queer has, with all its heartache and tribulations, been one of my greatest blessings and ultimate joys.

Over the years, I have woven through all kinds of work in the world, all of which have shaped me in elemental ways. As a young adult, I waitressed for ten years as I put myself through school. I made my way to Teachers' College and have had a successful career teaching English in many different contexts, with many groups of students, including psychiatric survivors, pipe fitters, the under-housed, and incarcerated men in the San Francisco jails.  My love of storytelling led me to filmmaking, and I completed an MFA in video and film production. I’ve made thirteen movies that have screened in festivals all over the world. I wrote and wrote and continue to write stories, poetry, scripts, and performances. I’ve journeyed through twelve years of Al-Anon work, service, and fellowship. I became a certified mediator and have worked doing community mediation for many years.

More recently, I became an Interfaith/Interspiritual minister through an experiential and rigorous program at One Spirit Learning Alliance Interfaith Seminary and went on to train and practice as a hospital chaplain. Ministry merges my enduring and interconnected love of ceremony and story. And in this extraordinary process, I find the threads weaving something familiar and something new. Bringing together all that I am passionate about – writing, listening, feeling, seeking – interfaith ministry offers a place and purpose for my dedication to co-creating and performing meaningful ceremonies, and to be of service to folxs as they pause to recognize and pass through the awe-striking beauty of changes and transitions.
